Located at 601 Salida Way, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Aurora is the Denver Metropolitan area’s leading source for female self-defense classes.

Why should every woman learn self-defense?

Because we live in an unpredictable world, and the sexual assault numbers are alarming. The National Violence Against Women Survey found that rape is a crime committed primarily against youth. Of the women who reported being raped sometime in their lives, 21.6% were younger than age 12, 32.4% were ages 12 to 17, 29% were ages 18 to 24, and 16.6% were over 25 years old. Thus, 54% of women victims were under age 18 at the time of their first rape and 83% were under the age of 25. Also, among developmentally disabled adult females, as many as 83% are victims of sexual assault. Finally, even Women who are in an intimate relationship with their significant other have experienced some sexual violence by their partner in their lifetime. So every lady 13+ would benefit from learning self-defense!

At what age should a girl start to learn self-defense?

What Gracie class should they start with? It is generally recommended to begin at age 13 since some of the content shared is PG-13. I believe that the Women Empowered Program is the best place to start for women (or girls) ages 13+ since its focus is to defend against the most common attacks against women. We’ve also found that women who complete this program continue on in their self defense journey by joining subsequent programs

What makes Women Empowered unique?

That it’s a ladies only self-defense program, and that its targeted focus is to teach ladies to defend themselves against the most common attack scenarios. It also teaches ladies not only the physical aspects of self-defense, but also the psychological aspects. Incorporating the psychological aspect gives ladies the thinking ability that they need to potentially prevent an attack in the first place.

What makes Women Empowered effective?

That it covers ALL aspects to creating a self-defense mindset. The WE program teaches, first, how to prevent an attack in the first place, but then follows up with the physical techniques just in case a woman ever needed to potentially save their lives in an attack.

Why is Women Empowered a better self-defense program for women compared to krav maga, Muay Thai or any other martial arts class?

Again, because the principles and techniques taught are targeted for very specific situations / scenarios. The techniques taught could either help a woman prevent a sexual assault from taking place and/or to defend themselves if need be.

What can a prospective student expect to learn after one month, three months, six months?

If training consistently, by the end of month 1 a student can expect to have a good overview of what the program will entail. By the end of month 3, their reflexes will begin to develop, but they will still need more practice in order to create / develop stronger reflexes. If a student has been consistently training, by the end of month 6 the student should have strong reflexes to ALL of the techniques taught. However, training a minimum of 8 months has shown to be the most effective time-frame in creating a solid muscle memory for the WE techniques.

Will there be sparring?

No sparring since the WE Program is solely for self-defense purposes. However, there are reflex development classes held periodically to test (and practice) a student’s reflexes to certain bad guy indicators.

Do you recommend transitioning to Combatives?

Yes, in fact the Women Empowered program is the gateway to other Jiu-Jitsu programs for women. After learning the Women Empowered Program many ladies feel empowered (and more confident). This opens the door to more Jiu-Jitsu, and therefore many ladies want to continue their self-defense journey. Gracie Combatives is the next step for many ladies.

Should I send my 6-12 year old daughters to Bullyproof or is it best to wait until they’re 13 and eligible for WE?

Girls who start training Bully Proof now will have better success in any adult program since they’ve already been exposed to the foundations of Jiu Jitsu. Creating these strong foundations early on will ensure their success in completing other adult programs, including the Women Empowered program.
