FAQs

  • Are you open?
Yes, we are open for training in all programs! Open Monday - Saturday, closed on Sunday.
  • What is your schedule?
Our schedule is constantly evolving as we adjust to increasing demand for high quality Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. See Class schedule.
  • How do I sign up for training?
Please see Programs page. Links to sign up are inside each program description.
  • What should I wear?
Please wear clean comfortable workout clothes if you don’t have a GI (uniform). We do offer a Free Loaner Gi Uniform, but only during your 10 Day Free Trial (picked up & dropped off at the Front Desk each day). Loaner Uniforms are only available at our Main Location (601 Salida Way). A White "Gracie" Gi Uniform is required if you continue to train beyond the 10 Days. These are available in our pro shop (at the Main Location). Remember, a clean GI MUST be worn for every class and a Clean t-shirt or rash guard must be worn under the GI.
  • What if I don’t have equipment and/or uniform?
No problem. Not needed for your first 10 Days of Classes. Just wear comfortable workout clothing. You can purchase a Gi in person (at the Main Location), or by going to https://store.gracieuniversity.com/ to purchase directly. All students must purchase a White Gracie GI (Uniform) to attend Combatives, Master Cycle, and all kid’s classes. Women Empowered does not require a GI, but does have its own uniform (see FAQs below).
  • What color of Gi does Gracie Jiu-Jitsu wear?
    White.
  • Can I rent or borrow a GI?
Yes, if you need to rent a Gi, we do rent them for $10 / Per Day (after your 10 Day Free Trial). These must be turned in to the front desk after each class. These are only offered at our Main Location (601 Salida Way). For SE Rec Center, please wear comfortable gym clothes until you are able to purchase a Gi. All students must purchase a white Gracie GI (Uniform) to attend Combatives, Master Cycle, and all kid’s classes. Women Empowered does not require a GI, but does have its own uniform (see FAQs below).
  • What if I am a beginner?
No Problem. We see beginners every day. Our Aurora jiu jitsu programs are designed (and taught) in a way that is easy to follow and understand. We have students of all fitness levels, experience, and various ages.
  • What if I don’t have any previous experience?
No problem! Our beginner programs are specifically designed for first-time jiu-jitsu practitioners and the techniques are always broken down into easy-to-follow steps. Always keeping safety, a priority.
  • Is Jiu-Jitsu safe?
At our academy, safety is the number one priority. In far too many BJJ schools, the classes are structured to meet the needs of the most elite students. If you are a beginner student, you are expected to serve as a “grappling dummy” for those above you. The thought process is, if you avoid injury, and stick around long enough, you will eventually figure it out. At our academy we take the opposite approach. Firstly, there is no competitive sparring in our beginner programs. As a result, you’ll have a chance to learn all the beginner techniques in a fully-cooperative environment, with like-minded training partners for 8-12 months. Once you move on to the advanced program, and you begin sparring, you will have the benefit of working with training partners of every skill level who are working with you rather than against you. This culture of collaboration and mutual benefit is extremely rare in jiu-jitsu, and we go to great lengths to make sure it is upheld at our academy. All instructors are law enforcement background checked. All adult students names are run against the Colorado Bureau of Investigation sex offender registry. We want a safe training environment for all students.
  • Do I need to be in shape?
NO. Jiu-Jitsu is the most fun form of fitness. Come train and train some more. You will reach your fitness goals!
  • How will my first class go?
You can expect to receive a 10 Minute Introduction for Combatives & Women Empowered Programs. This is a chance to ask any & all questions. For kids classes, it's hard to find time to answer a lot of questions in classes, so feel free to call us at 720-436-7093 or email us at graciejiujitsuaurora@gmail.com.
  • Will I get injured or embarrassed?
Everything about our beginner programs was specifically designed to make the classes as safe and encouraging for new students as possible.
  • Who will I practice with?
As a first-time student we will pair you up with a slightly more experienced student who can answer your questions and help guide your learning throughout the class.
  • Are lockers and showers available?
We do not have any showers, however, bathrooms are available for changing, and we provide common area cubbies for usage during classes. You may use the provided cubbies to store your personal belongings. These cubbies are visible from the Mat area.
  • What happens if I go out of state for travel or work?
You may place your membership on HOLD for a Maximum of 2 Months for a $20 Pause Fee (each Month). While you're out of town, review the Gracie University Website here www.gracieuniversity.com, and check for a Gracie Certified Training Center near your travel location. If they offer the same program(s) then you can take classes there and get credit at home. Keep in mind when visiting other locations that most do offer free training (up to 30 Days), but some may not. So you will need to check with them directly to be sure if any fees would be associated with your visit. When you return, let us know what classes you attended and we will give you credit on your attendance card.
  • How often can I attend class?
Depends on the Number of Classes that you enrolled for. We have 1 x Week Options - Up to UNLIMITED. It also depends on the program that you're attending. For example, Women Empowered is only offered 2 x week.
  • What are your cleaning procedures?
We are using CDC-recommended cleaning solutions to sanitize our mats EVERYDAY. We also frequently clean surfaces in our bathrooms, lobby, and front desk areas.
  • Can I bring a friend?
Yes. Have them go to the home page and Click on our 10 Day Free Trial Offer to complete the Waiver.
  • What’s the difference between jiu-jitsu and every other martial art?
Jiu-jitsu is designed to empower the weak against the strong and there are no physical prerequisites to get started. Literally ANYONE can learn jiu-jitsu especially when taught the Gracie way!
  • Do I need to bow or call anyone Sensei?
